Well we are into another year, Fires everywhere, floods in the Wimmera - pestilence is surely not far away - remember we live near Canberra - the pollies will be back in town soon.
Work is busy - lots of stuff falling over at work - its obviously wonky system month, but we have kicked it back into shape. I am a bit lucky I actually enjoy my work although I'm sure none of my colleagues would ever know due to my stable and sunny disposition :-)
Karen is away visiting friends, the puppies are asleep - it 2:30am and as I am typing this and listening to Tom Waits - I have an immense sense of melancholy in a gentle way. Life is rich and full - but at times we always look over the fence in search of greener grass, to be other - to paraphrase Pistol - are you a Officer or are you Common, young svelte and popular.
The drought drags on positively grinding down the landscape now to an extent that has become frightening.
The mess in Iraq drags on; our pollies race for the bottom in a charge to tear up the Commonwealth and social fabric in the name of the economy and security. People who do bad things should face the courts - countries that attack us or commit genocide should be smacked down, otherwise people and nation states should be left in peace. The USA are great and valued allies but they are wrong here and we have followed them down a cul-de-sac that ends only in the loss of blood and treasure for us and death and destruction for Iraq.
War on Terror - bollocks to that - what we are looking is just superpower petulance, hopefully the US can find a way clear when Bush leaves office until then I suppose we just have to KBO. As for leaving David Hicks to the tender mercies of the Marines at Guantanemo - I no longer care what he may have done in Afghanistan and I not sure I ever did - bring him home NOW - watch him fine - if he gets up to no good here charge him and try him, but leaving an Australian citizen in such a state is just plain wrong it is NOT what our Commonwealth is about.
How do we make it better - how do we get representatives that are representative - or maybe in reality they are and what we see acted out is the greed and selfishness that is really what we are as a society. If so how the mighty have fallen - we had such hopes and asperations as a nation and now we are so overdosed on economic growth and self actualization we have completely lost sight of care of the other and community.
See melancholy told you - maybe we can get NZ's Helen Clark to run for PM of the West Island or we could seek to become a NZ protectorate till we can be trusted to manage our own affairs.
